What The River Knows, a short teaser film, is a murder mystery/ghost story set against a backdrop of the worst day in Wilmington, NC history
WHAT HAPPENED ON 10 NOVEMBER 1898 IN WILMINGTON, NC?
In a nutshell, this: Within a six-hour time span, a mob of thousands led by white supremacist Democrats burned down a black press, running its editor out of town. Several prominent businessmen, Republican politicians and property owners, both black and white, were permanently banished from the city. Local government was illegally overthrown, enacting the only American coup d'etat, and countless numbers of blacks were murdered or missing from the city forever
An excerpt taken from Alicia's master's thesis, a feature-length screenplay, What The River Knows unfolds the story of a self-absorbed expat artist estranged from his family and enigmatic past. When he returns to Wilmington to bury his grandmother, he is Immediately captured by a spitting-image ancestral ghost, leading him to unearth secrets of a family and city torn apart for 100 years by white supremacy, greed, jealousy, and taboo relationships.
