Health & Physical Education Prepare Kids to Live Their Best Life!In December of 2015, the U.S. Congress recognized the importance of health and physical education (HPE) as key components of a student’s well-rounded education, under the new bipartisan federal education law, Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
In ESSA, Congress proposed $1.65
billion in funding for Title IV, Part A - a block grant that supports a well-rounded
education for students.
Unfortunately, in the very first year Congress only funded Title IV, Part A at $400 million – a mere 25% of what was proposed. As a result of this low funding, states and school districts will now
have to pick and choose among the dozens of programs that are funded under Title IV,
If we don’t act now, funding could once again be reduced – if not completely eliminated in 2018!
Join SHAPE America’s Online Advocacy Day!
For more than a decade, HPE teachers
have tirelessly advocated to elevate these subjects in school and increase
funding. Why? The benefits to students are endless - from better academic
achievement to fostering lifelong healthy habits.
Under-funding Title IV, Part A once again would prevent states and school districts from making a meaningful investment in the health and well-being of our nation's students! Diminishing these funds would be a step backwards, leading to the old days of marginalizing and cutting HPE under the old No Child Left Behind law.
Don’t let this happen! Send an action alert to Congress, asking for #MoreTitleIV!
