#IAMWHOLE 2017

Mental health difficulties are costing young people their education, their employment prospects and without support, are costing them their lives. On World Mental Health Day, Tuesday 10 October 2017, and beyond #IAMWHOLE will continue to challenge the stigma that is stopping individuals speaking out and seeking help.

We’ve already started, but we must go further

With the backing of Nothing But Thieves, we aim to reach more young people, and are calling on individuals to stand together against negative stereotypes and language surrounding mental health.

In 2016, #IAMWHOLE launched with support from the likes of Jordan Stephens (one half of UK band Rizzle Kicks), Ed Sheeran, James Cordon, Liam Gallagher and Dermot O’Leary. It reached millions of people across the UK, and around the world, with young people speaking out against stigma and seeking help. Watch last year’s video.

Support the campaign with your own #IAMWHOLE selfie

On Tuesday 10 October post your own #IAMWHOLE selfie or video, by picking a coloured pen that you feel reflects your current feelings or state of mind. Draw the #IAMWHOLE circle on your left hand and hold it up to the camera (landscape) and take a photo, or film yourself saying ‘I Am Whole’.

Donate to the campaign

Text ‘WHOLE’ to 70007 to donate £3 to YMCA today, alternatively donate online using BT MyDonate, and help us to continue to deliver mental health initiatives that change young lives.

Strengthen the circle of support available to young people by enabling YMCA to continue delivering the mental health initiatives that change and even save young lives. To find out more about the campaign email iamwhole@ymca.org.uk.

  • Thank you for helping us to tackle mental health stigma

    October 31, 2017

Thank you for joining #IAMWHOLE on World Mental Health Day to take a stand and speak out against the stigma that surrounds mental health.

While the day was a huge success, the campaign doesn’t stop there. We must continue to challenge the harmful language and negative stereotypes that are stopping so many young people from speaking out and seeking help.

YMCA’s research found that even though nearly nine in ten (88%) young people who have come across stereotypes and negative words think they should be challenged, less than half (48%) have done so. You can read the full research, ‘More Than Words’ at http://bit.ly/wholeresearch

Alongside the research we also produced free resources for secondary schools, primary schools and advice for parents and carers to help tackle the stigma that you can use and circulate http://bit.ly/2fZSjZe

If you haven’t had the chance yet, make sure you join us in posting your #IAMWHOLE selfie, watch and share the campaign film, and check out the exclusive reworking of ‘Broken Machine’ by Nothing But Thieves with a 16-piece orchestra.

Young people have also been sharing their experiences for the campaign from across the UK and Ireland, you can read and watch their stories at whole.org.uk or in this YouTube playlist.

Please donate now to help YMCA to continue delivering mental health initiatives that change and even save lives. Text WHOLE to 70070 to give £3 to YMCA today or donate online.

To receive further campaign updates, you can sign up to our mailing list, or join the conversation on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
