Save antibiotics, cut farm use

Every year, in the European Union (EU), an estimated 25,000 patients die because of infections caused by resistant bacteria which can no longer be killed by antibiotics.

We all need antibiotics that work. But overuse and misuse has spurred resistance. The more antibiotics are used, the more bacteria resist their effect.

We humans are often told to go easy on antibiotics, but did you know that farm animals should too? On average, in the EU, consumption of antibiotics is higher in food-producing animals than in humans.

It really is time the EU strengthened rules on the use of antibiotics in food-producing animals… and the EU is revising just now its law on veterinary medicines!

European consumer groups are urging Member States’ governments to back the EU Parliament’s position. Parliamentarians already took on board our prescription when they voted last year on the new legislation. Like us, they advocated:

  • Banning the routine preventive use of antibiotics in animals
  • Reserving for human use those antibiotics which are vitally important to treat people
  • Prohibiting the online sales of antibiotics
  • Reducing the need for antibiotics by improving farming practices including hygiene and animal care.

Click the support button and join our call for a more prudent use of antibiotics in food-producing animals in the EU!

Help us spread our message during the Antibiotic Awareness Week 2017.
