Tell 91 big banks to act!

On October 23-25, more than 90 of the world's largest banks meet in Brazil to recommit to the Equator Principles, a set of rules guiding which big infrastructure projects they will and won't finance.

By participating in this Thunderclap you can support the global movement to call on these banks to agree at their meeting to ACT: to stop financing climate disasters, and to respect Indigenous peoples’ rights and territories everywhere.

The 'Equator Banks' have committed to standards promising to finance projects in a ‘socially responsible manner’ and to avoid negative impacts on climate change wherever possible. But they haven't kept their word:

  • The Dakota Access Pipeline was financed by banks who signed the Equator Principles even though it was built to pump tar sands, the dirtiest oil on earth, and was fiercely opposed by the Standing Rock Sioux and Cheyenne River Lakota Tribes for threatening their water sources.
  • The Honduran Agua Zarca hydro project - where Indigenous leader Berta Cáceres was murdered for leading Indigenous resistance to the project - also past the 'Equator test'.
  • All over the world, Equator Banks continue to finance new coal power plants that add to deadly air pollution, pollute water and further add to climate disruption, even though new fossil fuel infrastructure makes the global climate goals agreed in Paris harder to achieve.

The meeting in Brazil is a clear opportunity for the banks to revisit their Principles. We are demanding that these banks stop financing climate disasters and respect Indigenous Peoples' rights and land. Join us!
