Bring cats to the blockchain!

Why CryptoKitties?

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are blowing up around the world. That’s the future, and that’s cool.

But we’re doing something different and far more important. We call them CryptoKitties.

Wait, what?

Look, blockchain—the thing that Bitcoin is built on—is what will make digital ownership possible.

Unfortunately, the blockchain has the personality of a bunch of ones and zeroes. We want a future for everyone, not one exclusive to Bitcoin miners, VCs, ICOs, and other equally fun acronyms.

So what’s a CryptoKitty?

Think digital, breedable Beanie Babies—

Wait, no, stop. That’s an upsetting mental image.

In less simple terms, each CryptoKitty is stored in a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain. These cats will be distributed via smart contract. Each cat will have a distinct visual appearance (“phenotype”) determined by its immutable genes (“genotype”) stored in the smart contract.

Dammit man, I’m someone on the internet, not a scientist! What does that mean?

People can collect one-of-a-kind digital kitties, which we are calling CryptoKitties. They can then trade and breed a nigh-unlimited number of kitties, with a variety of distinct traits that define its appearance and personality.

But… why cats?

Because when life hands you an esoteric concept like digital ownership, drawing whiskers on it is the first step towards understanding it. Cats are the ambassadors for pharaohs and the internet alike. They can do the same for the blockchain.

But, more importantly: cats are weird, funny, and hopelessly entertaining. You don’t have to understand cats to appreciate them.

We’re not trying to build the future with CryptoKitties—we’re trying to have fun with it.
