AVP, the on-campus sexual assault resource centre at the University of Victoria, supports survivors of violence, their loved ones, and people who have caused harm, and provides free workshops and other education on campus and beyond. Sexualized violence is a key issue for students. In Canada, 41% of all self-reported sexual assaults in 2014 were reported by students. A study of first-and second-year female students found that 58% had experienced sexualized violence. AVP is one of the only places on campus people can go to get confidential and anonymous support. With their current budget AVP’s part-time staff and team of volunteers can’t meet the increasing requests for assistance. Voting yes to AVP means more support, more education, and fundamentally more movement towards consent, respect, and care at UVic.
