Ancient Woodland in the UK is a habitat under threat, from the A27 Bypass at Arundel to the Northern Irish fragments that when combined cover a smaller area than that available for civil servants to park in Belfast. It is officailly recognised as a habitat of national importance wildlife and it's heritage, yet 85% of it has no legal protection in its own right, even though we are down to the last 2% of UK Coverage. We are campaigning to ensure that they are given stautory legal protection and we'd like you to to sign our petition calling on the British Government to give all Ancient Woodland Stautory Legal Protection. Even if you don't live in the UK, you can help us spread this important message.
An Ancient Woodland is; "woodland that has existed since 1600AD in England and Wales and 1750AD in Scotland. They have been around for many centuries – long enough to develop as ecosystems that are rich, complex, and irreplaceable" (See the Woodland Trust's Webpage).
Giving Ancient Woodlands the same protection as SSSIs isn't our full position, unfortunately the Petitions Website has a limited number of characters. This meant that "Ancient Woodlands should be afforded the same protections as that given to listed buildings, with the status of SSSI as a bare minimum for the short term". This may be seen as an error on our part, however the petitions process is one of engaging people who are of a political mindset. It records the location of people who signed the petitions, if you disagree with the wording of the petition, feel free to follow up on it by contacting your MP. This way you can ensure they know the true value of Ancient Woodlands so they can attend the debate and make a valid contribution to it. The subject of legal protection for ancient woodlands is going to be discussed, at least as part of the current Housing Bill White Paper that is still under consultation. By supporting this Thunderclap and Signing the petition, you are showing that MPs that the UK's anceint woodlands are national and international assett that we cannot afford to loose.
Already this petition has been featured in the Sheffield Star, imagine the potential should it be picked up by the national press.
In September 2016 the first #ProtectAncientWoodland petition came to an end with 16,705 signatures, lets see how many more signatures we can get this time.
