Pledge to vote for PR in 2019!

On Thursday February 1, 2018, it will be one year since Justin Trudeau took Canadian voter cynicism to a new level with his broken promise on electoral reform.

But Canadians who believe in a better democracy are not giving up! On February 1, Fair Vote Canada along with some strong proportional representation advocates and leaders are holding a press conference on Parliament Hill.

Fair Vote Canada will be announcing that we are launching a Vote Pledge - asking Canadians to pledge to vote in the next election for parties and candidates that we can TRUST.

The more Canadians sign the pledge, the more convincing our message and the more momentum we will generate!

Join our Thunderclap to promote the Pledge.

When you join, on February 1, all of us will automatically send this message:

In June, 2015, four months ahead of the last federal election, Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party promised Canadians the following on electoral reform:

1) "2015 will be the last election using first-past-the-post"

2) "We will make every vote count"

3) "Government is only as good as the advice it gets. It is only effective when it acts on good advice. So one of the principles of our comprehensive plan will be a commitment to evidence-based policy."

In the end, the Liberals chose to ignore the advice of nearly 90% of experts and members of the public who testified to the all-party committee in favour of proportional representation. Advice which backed up 16 previous commissions, committees and assemblies, and 15 years of public opinion polling in favour of PR.

Over the past six months, asked by the media or by citizens at town halls, Justin Trudeau has been stating that "only a few people" want proportional representation.

Prime Minister Trudeau appears to be banking on the theory that not enough people care about proportional representation to affect the Liberals in the next election. It's up to us to prove them wrong and make sure this important promise is achieved!

An Angus Reid poll done a few months ago shows the vast majority of Canadians disagree with Justin Trudeau's decision to break his promise.

Trudeau is also claiming that the very thing he promised Canadians and the experts recommended - to make every vote count - is a "threat to Canada."

It's obvious to most people who have followed this issue that the real "threat" to big parties and political insiders is that with proportional representation, no party will be able to gain 100% of the power with 40% of the vote again.

We couldn't trust the Liberals to keep their pledge to us, but the parties and politicians can count on our pledge to them.

Launching our Vote Pledge is our first step to show that:

  • Canadians are sick of strategic voting and the false promises politicians make to get those strategic votes

  • Many Canadians care deeply about proportional representation and this issue will move votes in the 2019 federal election

  • We will be campaigning in communities to support candidates whom we can trust on proportional representation, and

  • WE WILL NOT GIVE UP!

Join our Thunderclap today so we can deliver a strong message to the parties and the media on February 1, 2018 that Canadians believe in proportional representation and we will keep fighting until we win.
