Our village, Susiya, in the South Hebron Hills of the occupied West Bank of Palestine, is under immediate threat of demolition. The only way to stop the demolition is through international pressure.
The Israeli government wants to demolish 20 buildings, or one fifth of our entire village, including our health clinic which cares for around 500 people from our own and surrounding communities. The timing of the demolition - in the middle of winter - could not be more devastating. It will leave us exposed to freezing rains and harsh winds.
In 2012 we commissioned a master plan for our village. But the Israeli authorities rejected the plan, preventing us from building houses and essential infrastructure like running water and electricity. As a result, we live on our land in tents, forbidden from building or repairing anything.
The plan to demolish Susiya is a part of an extensive campaign across the West Bank and East Jerusalem. 2016 saw the largest number of demolitions in over a decade. As protected persons under international law, the Israeli government has repeatedly violated its obligations to Palestinians in the occupied territories.
Demolishing Susiya will be a war crime. Shelter is a human right and Palestinians must have the right to build on their own land. We call on the international community to act now in order to save our village.
