Every day in classrooms across the country, our nation's investment in language education is on open display. Children come to school eager to grow, and inspired by the opportunities that language learning may hold for their future: travel, jobs, culture, friendships. All too often, however, language programming runs into one major barrier: funding. Without adequate dollars, many who would dream of discovering a new world are shutout from it.
The World Language Advancement and Readiness Act (WLARA) is bipartisan legislation that can directly address student readiness for the 21st century. Investment in language education impacts our nation's international relationships, national security, and our economic future. HR 1239 creates a cost-effective and competitive grant program to establish, improve, and expand innovative world language programming in K-12 schools. Passage of HR 1239 would signal our country’s commitment to the strategic importance of the linguistic and human capital needs in the 21st century workforce by investing in students of all backgrounds.
Please tell your Representative in Congress to stand up for language learning by becoming a cosponsor of HR 1239.
