#PackWarning85 in India

The Supreme Court has put on hold Karnataka High Court’s order that quashed central government rules mandating larger health warnings on tobacco products. The Karnataka High Court struck down central government rules requiring 85 percent of a tobacco pack’s surface to be covered in health warnings.

Tobacco use causes 1 death every 6 seconds in India. Cigarettes and smokeless tobacco are highly toxic and contain carcinogenic substances. Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) 2016-17 report has proven that 85% pack warning made 62% of cigarette and 54% of bidi smokers think about quitting.

85% Pictorial warning is a landmark step in favour of public health in India. Maintaining 85% pictorial warnings will be instrumental in spreading knowledge, highlight health harms, and reduction in tobacco use behaviour. If 85% pack warnings are not protected, it will drop India’s global ranking from 3rd to 106th in Cigarette Package Health Warnings.

Save lives by protecting 85% pack warning by supporting #PackWarning85 on Facebook and Twitter.
