Five a day! – the number of dogs stolen a day
Please sign the #PetTheftPetition: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/212174
As you read this it is highly likely that one dog will have been stolen somewhere in the country. According to police force data at least five dogs a day are stolen in England and Wales but DogLost, the UK’s largest lost and found dog service believes this could be double that figure.
A petition set up seeking tougher sentencing for theft of a companion animal by Dr Daniel Allen of Keele University has now reached 82,000 signatures but we must reach 100,000 signatures by the 8th August 2018 to trigger a debate in Parliament.
The petition was created because Dr Allen was appalled at the number of pets being stolen and the misery that it brings to the owners many of whom are young children.
Dr Allen says "People do not steal dogs to love them, they use them, they abuse them, and they treat them like disposable objects. Dog theft is a gateway to wider animal cruelty, including puppy farming and dog fighting, and should be connected to wider concerns about dog welfare. Pet theft is a cruel and devastating crime, made all the more painful when the 1968 Theft Act refers to family pets as ‘personal items’. Pets are family - the law needs to reflect that"
SAMPA says “I would urge all pet owners to immediately sign the petition, we now live in fear of pet theft daily and we need protection from these vile human beings that choose to steal our pets for monetary gain, be it for reward, ransom or other heinous crimes. This crime must be taken seriously by the Government and a substantial minimum custodial sentence put in place to act as a deterrent.
The #PetTheftPetition has amongst others the support of the National Animal Welfare Trust, celebrities Ricky Gervais, Miranda Hart, Deborah Meaden, Peter Egan to name a few and MPs. I am also pleased to announce that Prof John Cooper, QC a leading barrister is providing legal advice as we progress toward our objectives"
One of the supporting MPs, Gareth Johnson, MP for Dartford said recently “This petition illustrates the strength of feeling on the issue. Dog theft is a cruel crime and whilst it continues, I will do all I can to highlight it and call for tougher sentences for the perpetrators.”
