The U.S. Supreme Court could issue its ruling in the case some are calling the nextCitizens United any day. On October 8, 2013 the Court heard arguments for McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission.
Never before has our political campaign system been as corrupted as now with unlimited corporate spending and dark money. Our democracy is eroding before us. But all over the country people are also fighting back and demanding change. 16 states called for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and related cases and the movement is growing.
Now is the time to take our fight to the next level and mobilize across the country on the day of the McCutcheon ruling.
Why do we need a powerful, unified push on decision day?
Citizens United took many people by surprise. It was over the ensuing weeks and months that the media and the American people began to realize the extent of the damage embodied in that disastrous decision.
With McCutcheon, we want to put the popular outrage front and center. And this time, the media will be paying much closer attention. So think what it would mean to see rallies in hundreds of cities and towns across the country — with thousands more citizens contacting their members of Congress, writing letters to their local newspapers, and spreading the word among their family and friends — all on the same day, all building momentum for a constitutional amendment.
My name is Jonah Minkoff-Zern and I'm the Senior Organizer of the Constitutional Amendment Campaign at Public Citizen. I care about this issue because I believe our system of fair and free elections is under attack on multiple fronts. The Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United opened the floodgates for special interest money and corporate influence in politics. At the same time, a rash of voter suppression laws in more than 30 states has threatened to make voting difficult, if not impossible, for millions of Americans.
The upcoming McCutcheon decision has the potential to make our campaign finance system even worse, and to give wealthy political donors even more influence over our democracy. It's time to take a stand, which is why I'm working to take our fight to the next level and mobilize across the country on the day of the McCutcheon ruling. I hope you'll join us!
