Befrienders beat loneliness

What can you do?

Add your social media support to our Thunderclap campaign.

Send in a selfie to info@befriending.co.uk showing the message "Befrienders beat loneliness" and "#befrienders". We will upload your images to our Befriending Week 2015 Facebook page to create an album of support.

Hear from people who are befrienders - we will be adding their stories to our Befriending Week 2015 Facebook page so you can find out what these amazing people achieve and what motivates them to help. You might be inspired to volunteer for a local service!

The background

Recent research indicates that loneliness is endemic in our society. The negative impacts of loneliness on physical and mental wellbeing are increasingly well-documented: loneliness exacerbates dementia, it has an adverse effect on the cardiovascular system, is more likely to lead to depression, eating and sleep disorders, and can affect the immune system. Studies indicate that loneliness is as bad for you as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Lack of connectedness, through loneliness and social isolation, shortens lives. Befriending can change lives.

Befriending is a cost effective early intervention service delivered by volunteers to people who are isolated due to a variety of circumstances such as old age, disability, long term health condition, sensory impairment, mental health issue, or who are experiencing isolation due to some other factor.

The results of befriending can be very significant. Sometimes, a befriender is the only person in their befriendee’s life who is not paid to be there, which makes a vital difference to the relationship between them. A volunteer befriender, supported, trained and sensitively matched, can be a lifeline to someone rendered vulnerable by an isolating condition. Befriending can provide people with a new direction in life, open up a range of activities and lead to increased self-esteem and self-confidence.
