World #FolicAcidAwareness Week

Help us to prevent Neural Tube Defects with Folic Acid!

January 8 - 14 is World Folic Acid Awareness Week!
Join us in this global effort to raise awareness of the importance of Folic Acid in the prevention of Neural Tube Defects (NTDs), and make this week event even bigger and better than last year!

NTDs are largely preventable, yet they still affect around ½ million pregnancies globally every year. PRECONCEPTIONAL FOLIC ACID IS KEY TO PREVENTION.

Most countries recommend that all women who ‘could’ become pregnant, take a daily supplement containing 400mcg Folic Acid, starting at least one month (ideally 3 months) before conception and continuing for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

The message is simple, yet far too many women remain unaware of the need to take folic acid at the critical time before they get pregnant.

Help us, the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (IF), our member organisations, partners and supporters to promote World Folic Acid Awareness Week every January as part of our Global Prevention Initiative to reduce the worldwide risk of NTDs and Hydrocephalus.

Folic Acid (Vitamin B9), is essential for healthy cell growth and development, providing the basic building blocks for DNA. This is why Folic Acid is so important during the early stages of pregnancy when cell growth and development is at its most rapid. It’s not possible to get enough Folic Acid to support a healthy pregnancy through diet alone, which is why daily supplements are recommended along with a healthy balanced diet rich in natural source folates and consumption of fortified cereals and grains.

Over 80 countries now have a mandate to fortify staple foods with Folic Acid to help further reduce the global risk of NTDs.

  • Thank you for supporting the World Folic Acid Awareness Week!

    January 8, 2018

We are very grateful to each and everyone of you who helped to make our World Folic Acid Awareness Week 2018 Thunderclap campaign such a great success. We more than doubled our goal! Thank you everyone!

We hope that you will continue to raise awareness about folic acid, including the vital role it plays in the primary prevention of NTDs like spina bifida and anencephaly, and encouraging governments and health care providers take action globally to help ensure that all women of childbearing age are consuming adequate amounts of folic acid before they become pregnant.

We will continue to share posters and key messages throughout this important week in our Twitter and Facebook accounts, so please do share and like these posts where you are able or post your own using our toolkit. Also, if you haven't yet signed up as a supporter of the GPI you can do so here.

If you would like support with any folic acid awareness raising activities, or raising awareness of prevention in your country, please contact our Programme Manager Global Prevention, Martine Austin at martine.austin@ifglobal.org.

We love to see what our supporters around the world are doing, so if you have World Folic Acid Awareness Week activities/events that you would like to see us feature, please contact Martine Austin on the email above, or our Communication Assistant Carmen Clemente at carmen.clemente@ifglobal.org.

We hope we can count on your support again in 2019!

    Very best wishes,
    the IF Team
