Energy is vital to the realization of peoples’ rights, social justice and sustainable economic development. But the world’s dominant energy systems fail to meet the needs of more than 2 billion people around the world and have destructive impacts on the health, livelihoods and environment of many local communities hosting energy projects and infrastructures. Worse, current energy systems have led to one of the gravest challenges humankind face today – climate change, which is already wreaking havoc on the lives of tens of millions of people worldwide and has reached the level of a planetary emergency.
This October 2016, thousands of people are organising hundreds of actions in every region of the globe to demand a transformation of energy systems. This joint initiative, called Reclaim Power, is also running an online petition to governments which will be delivered at the United Nations climate change negotiations in Marrakech in November. We’re encouraging you to share this petition far and wide, and join us in demanding that governments regulate the excessive and wasteful energy consumption of corporations and elites and also stop authorizing, financing and subsidizing new dirty energy projects and infrastructure. Instead, public finance and investments should be scaled up and redirected into democratic, pro-poor, renewable energy.
Reclaim Power is a collaboration between movements, local groups, networks and NGOs to strengthen the links between energy and climate justice struggles.
