Paris Agreement Going Live

The historic Paris Climate Change Agreement adopted in 2015 is entering into force on the 4th of November of this year. Please join the celebrations! You can celebrate the day by simply supporting this Thunderclap and sharing it on Facebook and/ or Twitter.

Here's the full text of the agreement in case you have not yet read it: http://unfccc.int/files/essential_background/convention/application/pdf/english_paris_agreement.pdf

You can also tell the world what the Paris Agreement means for you in a message you design, thereby helping to raise awareness for the need for rapid action and what immediate solutions are.

Below are some further ideas on how anyone can take part,  from individual citizens to major corporations and governments.

The speed with which the agreement has entered into force underlines just how much support climate action now has across the globe. The Paris Agreement is also an integral part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also agreed in 2015. What started as two agendas have merged into one bold vision of a better world for every man, woman and child.

Under the Paris Agreement, all nations have agreed to combat climate change and to unleash actions and investment towards a low carbon, resilient and sustainable future that will keep a global average temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius with the accepted international aim of working to limit it to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The Paris Agreement and the SDGs will be successful only if everyone fully supports them and helps bring their ambitious goals to life with real action – from national, regional and local leaders; from investors and businesses to citizens who desire to live in a safe and prosperous world, and who want to actively shape that world.

What You can do

You can for example celebrate with an article, blog, infographic, or a simple social media message, or you can record a video on your smartphone, pad, notebook or desktop device and post to social media. You can also make use of our digital assets for the day: https://trello.com/b/OEI1NrdX/paris-agreement-entry-into-force-4-nov

If you are a company, city, region or territorial government, why not light up your headquarters with a simple message, for example “We’re Taking Climate Action” or send a message to all staff, customers and colleagues via social media or on your web site

Some of the questions you can touch on in your message are:

  • What are your hopes and aspirations for a better future now that the Paris Agreement has entered into force?
  • How do you think your country, region, city, firm or organization can contribute?
  • What are you personally ready to do now to make the Paris Agreement work?

Key hashtags for 4 November

Once you have recorded your message, please post it on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, using the hashtag #ParisAgreement. Plus, in recognition of the mutually reinforcing and supporting role of the Sustainable Development Goals, add the #GlobalGoals. Looking forward to the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Marakech, you may wish to add #COP22 and #ClimateAction.

Please join in, so that on 4 November, the world can say: "All systems go!" for the Paris Agreement.

With 197 Parties, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has near universal membership and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep a global average temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.
