STOP Precarious Work

Global capital is driving fundamental changes to the way that people are employed. Secure jobs are becoming more and more rare, while agency work, contract work and temporary work are taking over. For young people, there is practically no other option – the only jobs on offer are insecure.

Workers in precarious jobs have little chance to join a union or to bargain collectively. Pay and conditions are being driven ever lower by companies that rely on precarious work to reduce their labour costs.

  • Thank you for your support in 2014!

    December 19, 2014
Thank you for your support for our Thunderclap campaign to STOP Precarious Work in October. Your support made all the difference; we are proud to say that our message reached more than 1,000 000 people on social media.

2014 has been a year of struggle for workers around the globe, but our work has helped to turn a few of those situations around.

In the Philippines, Dutch multinational NXP Semiconductors sacked 24 union officials for taking time off on national holidays in May. Through international campaigning IndustriALL succeeded in overturning this company’s union-busting attack.

The IndustriALL Rio Tinto campaign was launched this year. The campaign aims to build union power at Rio Tinto plants around the world, uniting workers in the struggle for decent work and to change mining giant Rio Tinto's unsustainable behaviour. On 7 October, thousands of workers at Rio Tinto operations around the world made their voice heard in a coordinated day of defiance.

For years, IndustriALL Global Union has lead a campaign demanding that Turkey sign ILO convention 176 on safety and health in mines. After the Soma tragedy in May, claiming the lives of more than 300 miners, the campaign intensified. On 4 December Turkish miners enjoyed a major win as the government finally approved the ILO convention.

2014 came to a violent start in Cambodia when protesting garment workers were arrested, shot and even killed. After massive international support for a living wage, including  two days of action around the globe, a new minimum wage of USD 128 was set in November. Too low to live off, IndustriALL's work for a living wage in Cambodia continues.
